Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about creating, signing, and storing your Will.
1How do I make my Will official after purchase?
Print the PDF on regular paper. Then sign it in the presence of two witnesses — both must be present at the same time. The witnesses must also sign. Without proper signing and witnessing, the Will cannot take effect.
2Who can be a witness?
Any adult who is not named as a beneficiary in your Will. Ideally, witnesses should also not be the spouse of a beneficiary. Common choices are neighbours, coworkers, or friends.
3Do the witnesses need to read my Will?
No. Witnesses only need to watch you sign and then sign the document themselves. They do not need to know the contents of the Will.
4Where should I store the signed Will?
Keep the original signed Will in a safe, accessible location — for example, a fireproof safe at home or with your lawyer. Tell your Executor (or Estate Trustee) where to find it.
5Can I update my Will later?
Yes. You can create a new Will at any time, which automatically revokes the previous one. Major life events — marriage, divorce, the birth of a child — are common reasons to update.
6What provinces does this cover?
We currently generate Wills for British Columbia and Ontario. Each Will is tailored to the specific requirements of the province you select.
7What if my situation is more complex?
If you have foreign assets, a separated spouse, a dependent with a disability, or wish to disinherit a spouse, the tool will let you know that a lawyer’s help is needed. You’ll have the option to book a consultation with Vistera.
8Can I talk to a lawyer after I purchase?
Absolutely. After purchase you can book a consultation with a Vistera lawyer to review your signed Will or ask questions about your estate plan.
Remember: witnessing is required
A Will is not effective until it has been properly signed and witnessed. Both witnesses must be present at the same time, and neither can be a beneficiary named in the Will. All parties sign on the designated signature page, and initial every page.
